H O P E ,   T H E   W I T C H

Before the Cataclysmic War witches had the use of real magic. Since then, magic has withdrawn. Hope is a witch without magic, and she has spent her life bitter, hopeless and desperate. She is forever looking for signs of magic's re-emergence, and becoming a whore was a way to pick up whispers and rumours from across the land. She is canny, smart and determined, and a lifetime of listening to drunken, relaxed men tell her their stories has given her an uncanny knack of separating truth from lies.

Magic's withdrawal means that Hope has to expend greater effort to practise her witchcraft. She has a vast knowledge of herbs and seeds, and their uses as medicines, drugs or poisons. She is aware of most of the poisonous creatures known on Noreela, and some that remain unknown to all but a few. She knows myths and legends from across the land.

Hope also treads the boundaries of insanity.

When magic returns, Hope is there to protect it. But her aims and intentions are never completely clear.
