Three hundred years before the events of DUSK, the Mages — S'Hivez, the exiled Shantasi Mystic, and Angel his ex-lover — were forced from Noreela at the end of the Cataclysmic War.

They had taken magic to themselves, bent it out of shape, abused it and corrupted it for their own ends. They were Mages, magicians who used magic to its full extent to experiment and probe its extremes … but they went too far. It drove them mad. It made them evil. They craved power, and their craving led to their ultimate defeat.

For a while, though, they were the scourge of Noreela. They revelled in their power and believed that it would be with them forever.

As DUSK begins, the Mages have been gone for three centuries. They are still feared, though they are more myth than reality now. The effects of their transgressions are felt every day … but they are monsters from memory, little more.

Many Noreelans even believe them to be dead.

But such evil is so difficult to kill.
