R E D   M O N K S

The Red Monks were men and women once … but now they're regarded as demons. Their one aim in life is to prevent the return of magic to the land, because they believe that there can be no magic without the Mages taking it for themselves once again. They are utterly brutal and unforgiving in their cause: if a witch in Long Marrakash boasts of performing a magic trick, Monks will travel there to kill her.

They have their spies, and their ways and means of knowing things. They hear whispers. If there's talk of magic in a village in the Widow's Peaks, the Monks will wipe out that village with no qualms.

And yet they are not well known across the land. Some people have seen them, some know others who have seen them. But to many they are little more than demons whose names are used to subdue unruly children or threaten more superstitious adults: 'Behave or the Monks will come for you'.

They wear red robes. They're violent, vicious and tenacious, and their inbred hatred and rage for all things magic makes them a difficult enemy to kill. Their bodies have changed over the generations since the Cataclysmic War, become something stronger than human and more able to shrug off wounds. They can take arrow hits and walk on. If they lose one limb, they fight with the other.

The first Red Monk was Jossua Elmantoz. He was on the beaches of The Spine at the end of the Cataclysmic War, and he saw what that war did to Noreela. He has vowed to never let it happen again

DUSK begins with a single Red Monk … but later in the story there are many.
