Three centuries before DUSK, the Mages Angel and S’Hivez misused the gift of magic for their own selfish means.  They ruined it.  In a terribly costly war they and their Krote army were eventually drive from the land, but the war ended with magic withdrawing from humankind’s grasp.

The war was won by Noreela, but it was a pyrrhic victory.  So much was lost.
